A devastating tragedy has shaken the Pimicikamak Cree Nation community after a 13-year-old boy, identified as Kalekg Nabess, was fatally shot on Saturday evening, August 16.

According to the Cross Lake RCMP, officers responded at approximately 5:40 p.m. to reports of a shooting at a residence in the community. When they arrived, they learned that Nabess had been critically injured by gunfire. He was rushed to the local Nursing Station, where he was pronounced deceased a short time later.

Authorities have confirmed that the incident is being treated as a homicide.

Suspect in Custody

RCMP reported that a 17-year-old male was arrested at the scene in connection with the shooting. Officers also recovered a firearm believed to have been used in the incident. At this time, investigators say they are not seeking additional suspects.

The youth remains in custody, and police have not yet released details on potential charges.

Community in Mourning

News of the loss has sent shockwaves through the tight-knit community, with friends, family, and neighbors mourning the sudden death of a young life cut far too short.

“Kalekg was just a boy,” one community member shared. “He had his whole life ahead of him, and now his family is left grieving a tragedy that should never have happened.”

The Pimicikamak Cree Nation, already facing challenges related to youth violence and community safety, is now grappling with the heartbreaking reality of losing a child to gun violence.

Ongoing Investigation

The Cross Lake RCMP, together with RCMP Major Crimes Services and Forensic Identification Services, are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Police have not commented on a possible motive.

Officials are urging anyone with additional information to assist investigators as they work to piece together the events leading up to the tragedy.
